The adventure begins! Today you depart from Amsterdam heading towards tropical Sumatra. The long flight of approximately 12 to 13 hours to Singapore brings you step by step closer to lush jungles, volcanoes and breathtaking crater lakes. Today is a long but varied driving day towards North Sumatra. The road takes you through lush landscapes, past hot springs and across the equator itself. In Bonjol stands the monument at the equatorial line — you literally stand with one leg on either hemisphere. A lunch in the historic Kotanopan Village and a coffee stop in the botanically charming Sihepeng make this transfer day a journey in itself.

Arrival on Samosir Island in the Majestic Lake Toba
Today you reach one of the absolute highlights of the journey: Lake Toba, the world's largest volcanic lake. After a stop at the spectacular Panorama Simago Mago and lunch in Tarutung you arrive at Parapat harbour. The ferry takes you across the sparkling blue water to Samosir Island, the heart of Batak Toba culture. Arrival at Tabo Cottage: your home for the next few days on the shore of this impressive lake.

From Samosir to Berastagi: Waterfalls and Temples
Today you leave the lake and drive towards Berastagi, the cool highland town at the foot of two active volcanoes. The route winds past impressive landscapes: the Panorama Simarjarunjung viewpoint, the spectacular Sipiso-piso waterfall that plunges dozens of metres below, the authentic Dokan Village with its traditional Batak Karo houses and the golden domes of the Lumbini Buddhist temple.

Sunrise on Sibayak Volcano, then to Tangkahan
Today awaits one of the most special experiences of the journey: climbing the active Sibayak volcano at night. At 04:00 you depart with headlamp and warm clothing for the climb upwards. Your reward is a breathtaking sunrise above the clouds, surrounded by sulphur fumes and views stretching far into the distance. After a well-deserved rest and breakfast, you continue to Tangkahan, deep in the rainforest.

With headlamp and backpack you climb the active Sibayak in the dark. The path winds upwards through nocturnal rainforest, and when you reach the summit the sunrise sells itself priceless.

As the world beneath you awakens in gold and pink light, you stand at the edge of an active volcanic crater. Sulphur vapour spirals upwards as the landscape comes to life.
Rest and breakfast after descent
After the descent there is time for a hearty breakfast and well-deserved rest. The energy you have spent on the volcano deserves a delicious recovery moment before the transfer day.

Arrival at Eco Glamping in Tangkahan
Today you arrive in Tangkahan, where a welcome drink awaits you and you can optionally take a refreshing dip in the Bulu River.
First Day Eco-Glamping in the Jungle of Tangkahan
You are now deep in the rainforest of North Sumatra, on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park — one of the last places on earth where elephants, orang-utans, tigers and rhinos live together in the wild. Today's programme is arranged by the local partner organisation and may consist of washing elephants in the river, jungle walks or river trekking. Let yourself be carried away by the rhythm of the jungle.
Deeper into the Jungle - In Search of Orang-utans
Because we go deeper into the jungle, unlike most groups we have a great chance of spotting wild orang-utans and of course many more animals such as gibbons, proboscis monkeys, various bird species and with a bit of luck we will also observe rare animal species. The guides know the jungle like the back of their hand and know exactly where to look. They watch for tracks, sounds and other clues that indicate the presence of animals. You will be amazed at the diversity of wildlife we encounter during this trek. After a day full of adventure the tents are prepared for your last night in the jungle.

After approximately 2 hours of further trekking we arrive at the Bat Cave. Countless numbers of bats live here and of course enough other animals!

Wade through crystal-clear mountain rivers between tall trees and lush greenery. River trekking in Tangkahan is an adventurous way to experience the jungle from a unique perspective.
Second Day in the Jungle: Goat Cave
A second day in the enchanting jungle of Tangkahan. The local partner organisation's programme again offers an extensive choice of adventurous and nature-focused activities. Whether you choose an early morning walk to hear the jungle awaken, a river trek or an encounter with the elephants — every day in Tangkahan is different and surprising. Night in the eco-glamping, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

Visit Goat Cave
The goat cave is an impressive cave located deep in the jungle. On the way you enjoy beautiful jungle and the flora and fauna of Gunung Leuser National Park. Once you arrive at the cave, you can experience the mysterious atmosphere and admire the unique rock formations.
Overnight in the middle of the jungle
Sleep in a tent surrounded by rainforest. The night sounds of the jungle are your lullaby: crickets, frogs and the distant calls of wild animals. You sleep in the Goat Cave. If you prefer not to, you can sleep at another location.
Third Day in the Jungle: In Search of Wild Elephants
The last full day in Tangkahan, the guides go in search of wild elephants. They remain wild animals and we hope they are spotted!

Farewell to the elephants and rainforest
In the territory where wild Asian elephants live, there is a chance to spot these majestic animals in their natural habitat. The guides are well acquainted with the behaviour and movements of the elephants, allowing them to guide you to the best spots to see them. It is an unforgettable experience to observe these impressive animals in the wild as they move through the jungle and go about their daily activities. Don't forget to bring your camera to capture these special moments! Please note that spotting an elephant is not guaranteed as they remain wild animals.
Transfer to Medan: City Life After the Jungle
Today you trade the rustling of the rainforest for the bustle of Medan, Sumatra's largest city. After the transfer with lunch along the way you become acquainted with the majestic Masjid Raya Medan, one of Southeast Asia's most beautiful mosques. After checking in at the hotel you have a free evening to explore the vibrant city on your own — from colourful Chinatown to bustling night markets.
